Several years ago my wife and I decided to plant an above ground vegetable garden. The concept is relatively simple. You build a box to hold your soil and organic materials, and then plant your seeds. The benefit of an above ground garden is that you don't have to dig up your yard and deal with rocks, roots, and poor soil.
We were excited to get started and made a list of everything we needed. Once the box was constructed, we layered in the manure, organic materials, and top soil. Finally, we laid out our vegetable rows and planted the seeds, topped with a light layer of planting straw, and watered. Then we waited, and waited, and waited. Nothing happened. Every morning as soon as it was light, I would run out to the garden to see what was growing. Every morning it was the same story, nothing. I was discouraged.
Starting a business from home to earn income online is a lot like planting a vegetable garden from seeds. You work like crazy to get from the idea stage to implementation. You create your business plan, design a website, find someone to host your blog, build an auto responder, write and track your ads, create content, etc. You are ready and anxious to make sales, and nothing happens. It is like your seeds have been planted and you are waiting for the seeds to grow. But it is not happening fast enough.
Like nature, "growing" a successful online business from your home requires an understanding of cycles. The first cycle is "startup" which is defined by frenzied activity that is new and exciting because you are taking a bold step towards securing you financial independence. The second cycle is the "planting" of your business where you are initiating the promotional campaign necessary to generate a list of prospects that can be converted to loyal customers. The third cycle is the "harvest" where you experience actual sales revenue and profit from your efforts.
The timing of these cycles is what I believe discourages many who start their own home based businesses with the best of intentions. For me, the startup cycle was fun, energizing, and exciting. I love to learn new things and this phase was pure joy. Same with the planting cycle; nothing but positive energy and anticipation. In the first 6 months of my online business venture, I brought in a total of $20. All that time, effort, and money for twenty bucks?! This is where my vegetable garden experience helped.
From the time that we planted the seeds in our new vegetable garden, it took 6 weeks of daily watering and plucking weeds before we saw the earliest signs of seed germination. From that point, it was another 6 weeks of watering, weeding, and pest control before the garden actually started to take on the look of a garden that was going to produce results. Four months into it, we started taking out fresh organic vegetables and putting them on the dinner table. The harvets cycle was very satisfying, but it took alot of patience and confidence that with the right effort, the vegetables would grow.
Back to the business - Most people who have not had the vegetable garden experience would have given up after making only twenty bucks after six months. Not me. I knew that the seeds had been planted, and I was diligently watering and weeding daily in the form of email marketing and content distribution to build my subscriber list. True, six months may seem like a long time to not generate revenue from your efforts, but it really isn't if you consider that the business can support you for the rest of your life. The patience and persistence paid off when the money came flowing in, just like tomatoes ripening on the vine.

JAY, Vt. (AP) ? Vermont's top elected officials joined the owners of two ski areas and a Burlington-based developer on Thursday to announce the most ambitious series of economic development proposals in the history of northern Vermont, promising, as one official put it, to "transform the face of the Northeast Kingdom."
The Northeast Kingdom is the name often used to describe Vermont's three most northeasterly counties, Orleans, Caledonia and Essex, an area of the state historically marked by high unemployment and an inability to attract much economic activity.
That is starting to change, a process given a big boost Thursday with the announcement of big upgrades at the region's two ski resorts; a hotel conference center and two new manufacturers coming to the downtown of Newport, the region's principal city; and a longer runway and new light aircraft maintenance facility at the state airport serving the area.
Bill Stenger, president of the Jay Peak Resort and a longtime leader of economic development efforts in the region, said much of the estimated $500 million to be invested in the various projects will come from foreign investors taking advantage of a special visa program encouraging them to invest their capital in the United States. The EB-5 program was just reauthorized for three more years by Congress this month.
The EB-5 program has enabled two foreign firms, South Korean biotech firm AnC Bio, and Menck Window Systems, a German-based maker of high-end energy-efficient windows, to plan to open plants in Newport. Together with a hotel and conference center planned for the shores of Newport's Lake Memphremagog by 95-year-old Burlington developer Antonio Pomerleau, the projects are expected to revitalize a community that has seen tough times in recent decades, despite its spectacular setting on a large lake that extends into Quebec.
"We believe this undertaking will fundamentally alter the economic landscape of the Northeast Kingdom and how the international business community views this region of Vermont," Stenger said.
Stenger said neighboring Canada has had tremendous success with its own special visa program for foreign investors, and that he began pressing Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., to push for a similar U.S. program in the 1990s. Leahy, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote the recent legislation updating and reauthorizing the program.
"With our long history and tradition of welcoming new Americans, our country should continue to foster and strengthen our immigration through an investment programs like Australia and Canada have done," said Leahy, who attended Thursday's event.
Projects announced Thursday included:
? AnC Bio plans to have a manufacturing facility up and running in Newport by spring, with construction of a 75,000 square-foot research tower to begin in the fall. The company is working on artificial organisms "using patented hybrid bio-digital technology." Stenger said the company will invest $104 million and is expected to employ 500 full-time workers, spinning off an economic impact that will generate hundreds more jobs in the region.
? Menck Window Systems of Hamburg, Germany, plans to open a U.S. base in Newport with 140 employees by early 2014, investing $20 million.
? The Newport Marina Hotel and Conference Center, a $100 million project that Stenger said is a key to the synergy that needs to develop between Newport's Main Street, just uphill from the lake, and other new developments on the lake shore.
? An expanded runway, new hangar and light aircraft maintenance facility, bonded warehouse and free-trade zone at the Newport State Airport in neighboring Coventry.
? Snow-making upgrades and four new lodges able to accommodate 1,200 visitors at the Burke Mountain ski area, which was acquired by Stenger and his fellow Jay Peak owner, Ariel Quiros, earlier this year. Ongoing construction of new hotel and other facilities continues at Jay Peak.
One long-time state senator serving the area expressed concern that the rural region might be biting off more than it can chew in terms of providing employees and infrastructure to support the new enterprises.
Vincent Illuzzi, now a candidate for state auditor, called Thursday's announcements in Jay, Newport, Coventry and Burke "a bit overwhelming and a touch scary. It will transform the face of the Northeast Kingdom as we know it, but it's going to be a challenge."

Is it just me that gets a little bugged by providers who make ads which are either clearly untrue, or simply something they could never prove? I'm not talking about the usual stuff like 24/7 support, but for example .. On WHT right now there's two different VPS offers that both say something like 'the best VPS your money can buy' - well they can't both be true? There's also a banner ad which says 'Best uptime in the industry' - Really? you've monitored every other provider on the planet and can show the stats? I don't know what regulation there is in the US for advertising, in the UK we have the ASA and here's a little reminder that you can't just say what you want when you write that next advert. http://www.asa.org.uk/Rulings/Adjudi...DJ_173899.aspx Thoughts? As a provider, do you ever challenge other company ads through bodies such as the ASA? |

Words like "best" are subjective. When I say I'm the best lover in the world that is my opinion and although most women would probably agree with that statement there are going to be some hard core lesbians out there that don't. When a VPS provider says they're the best they probably think they are and there might be others that agree. Best uptime? Maybe they've had 100% uptime on every server (all 1 of them) for the last 5 seconds. It's all about the basis of their claims and the opinion words they use. |

This is the way people advertise their businesses now. I'd have to agree with cd/home, even the industry leaders don't care much about the terms they use. Some of them can be misleading at times, and false advertising later results in a bunch of angry customers who didn't get what they expected. Problem with the hosting industry is that everyother day a kid is opening a webhosting website, and there is no way they can be stopped or regulated. __________________ ? Shinjiru Technology Inc. ? Nice one! Still have the chuckle on my face... In marketing it is often the case one uses subjective assumptions for psychological reasons - when you see words like "best", "top", "quality",and all the "-est"'s out there, the prospect is presumed to want to try the vendor out. And as someone above said, would you seriously consider a company if they said something along the lines of being average or just mainstream? I agree, it may be best to try and leave the meaningless superlatives out of your marketing campaigns, yet, as cheap as it is, it does work on the "lesser" minds, I guess... In this respect, I quite like the rules in Google AdWords, where you're not to provide misleading information, or else your ad comes a cropper. This reminds me the situation when you go to, say, Petticoat Lane Market on Saturday and every seller is shoving their goods in your face with the "best" argument! |

On Oct. 14 in Manhattan,?fragments of Mars, the moon and asteroids that have fallen to Earth go up for sale, in what auction house Heritage Auctions is billing as the largest public meteorite auction ever held.
More than 125 items are for sale, a number of which have no minimum bid attached.?
The growing market for meteorites has driven the emergence of a meteorite prospecting industry in northwestern Africa and Oman, but even as people scour the deserts for meteorites, rocks from space remain among the most rare things on Earth.?
Taken together, every single meteorite known to exist would weigh significantly less than the world?s annual output of gold, said Darryl Pitt, the meteorite consultant for the auction.
Nearly all known meteorites originate in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and research tied a few back to?the large asteroid Vesta. Vesta's surface bears evidence of collisions, including a large crater near its southern pole that could have ejected rocks onto paths that intersected with Earth?s. [See Photos of Meteorites for Sale]
This sale includes material from six meteorites that originated on Vesta.
Bits of Mars and the moon are much more rare, but they, too, have been launched by asteroid impacts. About 150 pounds (68 kilograms) of moon meteorites are known to exist, and none has been found in Europe or the Americas. About one-quarter, however, have been found by scientists on the cold desert of Antarctica, according to auction materials.
Mars' rocks present?a particular challenge to identify, because humans haven't been able to bring Martian rocks back to Earth, as has happened with moon rocks. However, scientists do know the composition of Mars' atmosphere, and they have matched it to the composition of pockets of gas contained in some meteorites, confirming their Martian origin.
Next month's auction is slated to feature meteorites from both places, including a fragment of?the Tissint meteorite, which fell in Morocco in July 2011; the fragment came from a larger specimen owned by the Natural History Museum of London. The auction also includes two halves from a 4-pound (1.8-kilogram) lunar meteorite that is the fourth largest available for private ownership.
Exotic origins and scientific interest aside, meteorites can also be beautiful. Some can look like abstract sculptures or are dotted with yellow peridot, the August birthstone. In some cases, slices reveal the metallic patterns hidden within the meteorite.
This Mars meteorite landed in July 2011 as part of a shower in the vicinity of Tissint, Morocco, the location that gives the meteorite its name. Collectors and institutions have since snapped up Tissint meteorites. This meteorite, which weighs 0.75 pounds (327 grams), locks into a larger specimen now owned by London's Natural History Museum.
A meteorite has no value until it has been authenticated by meteoriticist, a scientist who studies meteorites. To examine a meteorite, a meteoriticist must look at the rock's internal matrix by cutting away a piece. As a result, all meteorites must be cut, except those that fall as part of the same meteor shower, Pitt said. A description of the meteorite and its name are then published. [Facts About Meteorites]
A backstory can also make a meteorite more valuable to collectors; for instance, meteorites seen falling from the sky are more valuable than those discovered only after they are on the ground, Pitt said.
The auction is scheduled to take place on Sunday (Oct. 14) at the Fletcher-Sinclair Mansion at 2 East 79th Street, Manhattan. The public can view the meteorites on Thursday (Oct. 11) from noon to 8 p.m. ET, on Friday and Saturday (Oct. 12 and 13) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Sunday (Oct. 14) from noon to 3:30 p.m.

Mayo Clinic
ROCHESTER, Minn. -- Mayo Clinic researchers have found a way to detect and eliminate potentially troublemaking stem cells to make stem cell therapy safer. Induced Pluripotent Stem cells, also known as iPS cells, are bioengineered from adult tissues to have properties of embryonic stem cells, which have the unlimited capacity to differentiate and grow into any desired types of cells, such as skin, brain, lung and heart cells. However, during the differentiation process, some residual pluripotent or embryonic-like cells may remain and cause them to grow into tumors.
"Pluripotent stem cells show great promise in the field of regenerative medicine; however, the risk of uncontrolled cell growth will continue to prevent their use as a therapeutic treatment," says Timothy Nelson, Ph.D., M.D., lead author on the study, which appears in the October issue of STEM CELLS Translational Medicine.
Using mouse models, Mayo scientists overcame this drawback by pretreated stem cells with a chemotherapeutic agent that selectively damages the DNA of the stem cells, efficiently killing the tumor-forming cells. The contaminated cells died off, and the chemotherapy didn't affect the healthy cells, Dr. Nelson says.
"The goal of creating new therapies is twofold: to improve disease outcome with stem cell-based regenerative medicine while also ensuring safety. This research outlines a strategy to make stem cell therapies safer for our patients while preserving their therapeutic efficacy, thereby removing a barrier to translation of these treatments to the clinic," says co-author Alyson Smith, Ph.D.
Stem cell therapies continue to be refined and improved. Researchers are finding that stem cells may be more versatile than originally thought, which means they may be able to treat a wider variety of diseases, injuries and congenital anomalies. Stem cell therapy is an emerging regenerative strategy being studied at Mayo Clinic.
"By harnessing the potential of regenerative medicine, we'll be able to provide more definitive solutions to patients," says Andre Terzic, M.D., Ph.D., co-author and director of Mayo Clinic's Center for Regenerative Medicine.

Hmm... the title is a bit misleading... "select" might had been a better descriptor than "make"
I don't get how this is about making a shower curtain? Everything in it was purchased.
Am I the only that thinks paying $100 for a cotton shower curtain is overkill?
I'd only pay about $15-20 for a shower curtain; probably at Ross or TXMaxx or Marshalls. I agree with him that a white or partly clear shower curtain is nice in a small bathroom where you want to let light in.
Does your shower curtain rod have a bump where the 2 sides come together or is it rough? Do your rings not slide very well? Home Improvement stores sell a curled plastic tube for about $3 that you can use to wrap a straight shower rod so your rings will slide smoothly. It's long & you can cut it to the proper length with regular scissors.
Rats, I thought he was gonna talk about how he sewed a shower curtain for the bathtub in the kitchen. (My sister used to live in a place like that but hers didn't have a shower. Maybe his didn't either but he kinda made it sound like that's what this was gonna be about.)
Also, yeah, "you don't have to spend a lot" on the fabric curtain but then he says he likes the $100 ones from whateverhesaid? Um, ok.
Jenncharina, no, you are definitely not the only one. I wouldn't pay upwards of $25 for a shower curtain.
And in fact, I do like the hotel type shower curtains that are a combo of a curtain and a liner, so I don't to use a liner. The last one lasted me about 6 years, then it was no longer quite waterproof and it was time to replace it. So I did - I bound a decent replica at Bed Bath and Beyond (or what's it's called), it was $25 and I had a coupon for 20% off.
I just use a cheap (less than $10) cotton shower curtain with no liner, and I wash it weekly. As for the bump on the rod, I use rings with rollers; they do work much better than the plastic ones.
Well, the curtain hooks are nice.
Eating in the bathtub kinda grosses me out.
Disappointing...
Meh, whatever.
ouch... not such good reviews in the bathroom.. Sorry chaps...
You're absolutely right that it's not "making" in the sense of the word you'd normally think.. I overlooked that and we can change it.
As for the price point, you're absolutely right that that is a lot to spend on a shower curtain, AND you can certainly get a nice cotton curtain for far less, BUT if you could get really close and actually see this Matouk shower curtain, you'd see that it was really special and nice and worth it as you'll keep it for years. I certainly didn't start with buying this one - it was a splurge - but I've been converted. :)
Cheer up, Maxwell. It's not even a fraction as horrible as the jeans-in-the-freezer post, lol. But really? "You don't have to spend a lot of money.....just about $100." I could overlook the use of the term 'make' but this comment is over the top. (I am at Apartment Therapy, am I not?) And why no mention of the curved shower rod? Still not inexpensive in the big scheme of things (at least by my definition) but I found one @ 50% off + used a 20% off coupon. Definitely a luxury in a small space which nets a large impact..
Oh, and my hotel quality white shower curtain/liner which is soft, supple & allows lets the light through. is going on six yrs old & showing no signs of wear. Got it on clearance as well with another 20% off coupon at roughly a fourth of what you're suggesting. It CAN be done.
Hmm, maybe a more apt description would be "how to set up your shower curtain" or something. :-) I bought those exact shower curtain hooks on at your suggestion, Maxwell, and I love them to death...well, as much as one can love 12 super-functional metal hooks. Thanks!
Hey Maxwell, Any sources for oil rubbed bronze shower curtain hooks with ball bearings that are as nice as the ones you recommend? I can only find the sort of standard lightbulb shaped ones.
I agree that 100 dollars may be too much to pay for a standard cotton white shower curtain, BUT I appreciate the advice from someone who has thought about it a lot over time and come to the conclusion that good basics often work best. I think the negative comments are a result of people's expectations being set that this was a post about DIY'ing your own curtain.
I am currently in the Peace Corps in Africa. We (all the other volunteers and I) bought a bunch of Shetanges (pronounced She-tang-ae), which are the traditional african cloth that women wear was a sort of sarong. We cut them into 1' squares and then we exchanged them. I have sewn them into a shower curtain. Its awesome and always reminds me of my time in Africa, and its definitely one of a kind, and something I will always treasure.
I made my shower curtain out of two emerald-colored saris with gold embroidery, and my final cost was well under half of what this guy spent.
And what's the point of calling something a "one-minute tip" if it lasts for more than two minutes? This video was both inaccurate and unhelpful, since its only point was to say "I like expensive plain white curtains and liners that aren't too thick." Whoop-dee-doo.

Hiding is better than dying,? and Munther, 10, who told charity workers how a boy standing next to him was shot dead outside a school and he was hit in the neck.
Thousands of children have died in the conflict and ?many more have been injured, traumatized or forced to flee their homes,? the report said. ?Boys and girls continue to be killed, maimed and tortured. These appalling violations against children must stop and those carrying them out held to account.?
It added that the testimonies ?corroborate violations documented by the United Nations, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.?
?The acts described are consistent, recurring and appalling,? it said. The organization deals with children and families in both Lebanon and Jordan.
The charity is asking people to sign a petition, "Stop the Crimes Against Syria's Children" to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
?Horrific acts of violence are being committed against children in Syria,? Carolyn Miles, Save the Children?s president and CEO, said in a press release. ?These children need specialist care now to help them recover from their shocking experiences. Their testimonies should also be documented so that these violent acts against children are not committed with impunity.?

Syrian child, Taybah Al-Hajji, 1, whose family fled their home in Aleppo due to Syrian government shelling, sits next to her one-month-old brother Abdulghani, at the Bab Al-Salameh border crossing near Turkey.
Miles is in New York for the United Nations General Assembly hearings this week. On Tuesday, President Barack Obama condemned Syrian President Bashar Assad as ?a dictator who massacres his people? in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly.
Kathryn Bolles, the charity's senior director of emergency health and nutrition, told NBC News by phone that atrocities against children were being carried out by all sides.
She said that the stories in the report, detailed below, were illustrative and that there were "hundreds of thousands of families that are going through this."?Bolles added that some of the names had been changed to protect the children and their families.
NYT:?In Arab Spring, Obama finds harsh lessons on diplomacy
Nur, who is now living with her family in the Za?atari refugee camp in Jordan, told the charity that she did not play. ?Why? Because I am not young anymore. I go to the bathroom, take a shower and then sleep. That is all,? she said.

Nur, nine, came to Jordan with her family to escape the violence in Syria. She now lives in a tent with her family in Za'atari refugee camp in the desert of northern Jordan where conditions are harsh and the camp authorities are underfunded and struggling to meet the basic needs of the overwhelming numbers of refugees arriving each day.
She said she had once been happy in Syria. ?Then the violence started and they started to make us suffer. There was nothing that they did not use to hurt us with,? she said.
The Arab Spring is dead -- and Syria is writing its obituary
Nur spoke of Syrian forces using airstrikes, bombings, missiles and ?every weapon you could think? against people in her home village.
?I was terrified. Us along with my cousins, neighbours, aunts and people we know used ?to go to the shelter to hide. I used to like hiding. Hiding is better than dying,? she said.
'I ran and I cried'
Ten-year-old Ala?a told how he ran ?so fast? when shells started to fall. ?I ran and I cried at the same time,? he said.
?When we were being bombed we had nothing. No food, no water, no toys ? nothing,? he said.
??One day men with guns broke into our house. They pulled out our food, threw it on the floor and stamped on it, so it would be too dirty to eat. Then we had nothing at all. Soon after that we came here.?
NBC's Richard Engel, who has just returned from his third trip inside Syria, since the uprising began, joins Andrea Mitchell Reports to discuss the situation on the ground.
Syria activist: Hundreds feared dead as Assad escalates airstrikes
Ala?a's father, Nabil, said his son ?cries a lot without telling us why and he?s started sleepwalking. My other child has started to stutter.?
?The younger children still cry when a plane goes overhead or a pot falls to the ground,? he said. ?They?re traumatized. I?ve spoken to lots of parents and they say the same thing. No child has escaped this. Children aren?t children anymore. Watch any child. They play and look normal, but they can only keep this up for a while, and then they become sad again.?
He said he had seen children used as human shields in the village of Saydeh. ?When two tanks came into the village I saw children attached to them, tied up by their hands and feet, and by their torsos. The tanks came through the village and no one stood in their way or fought because we knew we would kill the children,? he said.
?After that happened I cried like a woman. I was close to losing my mind. I have never felt so helpless as the moment I saw those children strapped to those tanks,? he added. ?? Let everyone know this is where this terrible thing happened.?
'She died feeling sad'
Omar, 11, who also lives in the Za?atari refugee camp, told the charity workers that one day he was playing with his brother, and the two boys were teasing their cousin.
?She was upset. She left us and went to her house. That night, a shell destroyed my nine-year-old cousin?s house ? the one we?d upset during the day. I regret that she died feeling sad,? he said.
Mission 'nearly impossible': Syria envoy downbeat on new job
The report said 10-year-old Munther, who said he wanted to be a doctor, had two bullet-sized wounds on his neck.
?I was on the street when the bullets were first fired. We were standing outside a school ? we?d just posed for a photo. There were lots of children around,? he said.
?Then the shooting started. There was chaos. Everyone was screaming. There were bullets and blood everywhere. A boy called Amjad was standing next to me. He was shot in the head. I didn?t realize at first that he was dead. He fell forward on his knees, in a praying position. He was 15,? he added.
?Then I felt a terrible pain. I?d been shot too ? in my neck. Here, see my scars ? Luckily I was with my friend?s mother. She picked me up and took me straight to a clinic to get help. I recovered from the shooting. We held a funeral for Amjad. Lots of people came. ? I was so sad that day.?

There was plenty of hoopla last week. The Federal Reserve's announcement Thursday of a third round of quantitative easing sent investors scrambling for gold and silver. The Fed injected a liquidity fix by announcing the purchase of an additional $40 billion per month in mortgage-backed securities, increasing its holdings of longer-term securities by about $85 million each month through the end of the year, as well as keeping interest rates "exceptionally low" until 2015. In a race to debase the Bank of Japan joined the party this week announcing an asset buying program intended to stimulate spending. This month, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi gave details on a plan to buy debt of member states, while China approved infrastructure spending. As Milton Friedman once said, "Only government can take perfectly good paper, cover it with perfectly good ink and make the combination worthless."
In a recent interview Peter Schiff was asked how high the price of gold may reach. He answered that there is no ceiling for the precious metal, because there is no limit on how much money will be printed. He's right again. In its latest announcement the Fed basically said as much. Let's keep in mind that no market moves in a straight line up or down, and the above only refers to the long-term trend.
The thing to notice here is that QE 3 is open-ended, in the words of the Fed "will remain appropriate for a considerable time after the economic recovery strengthens." In other words, the Fed is promising that it won't start raising interest rates as soon as the economy looks like it is recovering but will wait until the economy is actually prospering.
Apparently, this is the first open-ended QE program in the Federal Reserve's history.
While Keynesians and Austrians may debate the pros and cons of this new round of QE, it is clearly good news for precious metals investors. Even though the expectation for stimulus was, to a certain degree, already priced in, precious metals went on a binge.
The Fed standard operating procedure for dealing with a weak economy is to buy short-term U.S. government debt from banks which adds to bank reserves and enables the banks to lend money to consumers and business. This is supposed to give the economy a booster shot. The former QE rounds didn't work because the banks had little incentive to lend money due to the low interest rates that they can earn. So, they prefer to sit on their reserves. But the Fed announcement is supposed to change that.
Paul Krugman in his recent column in the New York Times explains this nicely:
The idea here is that by indicating its willingness to let the economy rip for a while, the Fed can encourage more private-sector spending right away. Potential home buyers will be encouraged by the prospect of moderately higher inflation that will make their debt easier to repay; corporations will be encouraged by the prospect of higher future sales; stocks will rise, increasing wealth, and the dollar will fall, making U.S. exports more competitive.
Let us now proceed to today's technical part and see how the announcement of the open-ended QE impacted the general stock market (charts courtesy by http://stockcharts.com). After that, we will move on how this can impact the precious metals prices in the following weeks.
Larger Image
In the very long-term S&P 500 Index chart we see a situation more or less the same as what we had last week. Stocks are less than a half percentage point below last week's closing price level. We have seen some consolidation recently, but, given the size of the previous rally, it seems that this is not the end of it. The RSI level reflects a reading very close to 70 and the situation is quite overbought on a short-term basis. The next significant resistance line is at the 2007 highs, at 1550. A move to this point appears to be very much in the cards although a consolidation could be seen first.
The analysis of any market is strengthened if different proxies for a given asset lead to the same outcome. In this case, for confirmation (or invalidation of the above) let's now have a look at the Dow Jones Industrial Average's proxy - the DIA ETF.
In the short-term DIA chart we see the confirmation of the reverse head-and-shoulders pattern - a bullish phenomenon and an indication that stocks will trade higher in a few weeks. This chart, however, does not tell us if the short-term consolidation is over or not. It could be the case that we've seen enough to verify the breakout and have the rally resume, or we could see a short-term decline from here, especially if the USD Index moves higher.
Let's take a look how the above can impact the precious metals market.
The Correlation Matrix is a tool which we have developed to analyze the impact of the currency markets and the general stock market upon the precious metals sector. If you are not sure how to interpret the above numbers, you can learn more about the Correlation Matrix in our Dictionary and you can watch the video about gold & silver correlations in the Multimedia section on our website. Moving back to this week's analysis, the question is: what picture does our previous analysis of stocks (above) paint for the precious metals market?
The answer is that stocks' current impact on the precious metals sector is very bullish for the medium term (3 weeks or more) but rather unclear for the short run (up to 3 weeks or so). The reason is that the significant and positive correlation between precious metals and stocks makes the situation similar to the precious metals as it is for stocks. It seems that the events mentioned in the first part of this essay contributed greatly to this situation - after all open-ended QE3 is something that is likely to positively impact almost all asset prices - except for the USD Index.
Summing up, the outlook for the stocks in general is bullish for the medium term and rather unclear for the short term. Because of the shape of correlation between precious metals and the general stock market, this translates into a rather unclear short-term outlook for precious metals and a bullish medium-term one. The situation on the precious metals market is very overbought from the short-term perspective, so traders should be careful if they wish to bet on the immediate continuation of the rally.
