Today at the first?eponymous?conference for its Lync product, Microsoft announced that it will link the enterprise-focused?communications?service with Skype, the consumer-friendly VoIP and video calling tool. The company also announced that mobile apps for the service are on the way.
The integration with Skype will allow the two products to work in better harmony, with each preserving its place in the Microsoft product lineup. Both?instant?messages and voice communications will be passable through each service to the other. Video calling will take longer, but should land in the next 12 months.
In short, by June, you Lync users will be able to dial out to Skype IDs, and Lync friends in Skype.
This removal of a wall between Skype and Lync was made possible in part by the?merging?of the Skype and Lync engineering teams. It isn?t clear if the Skype engineers were aglomed to the Lync team of the other way about, but it would seem that some of the vaunted?independence?that Skype enjoyed?immediately?following its acquisition has been annexed in favor of?synergistic?pooling of resources.
Just as the Skype integration won?t be up until June, the promised mobile apps for Lync are not yet ready either. Lync apps for Windows Phone and iOS will be out in early March, while the Android app will come out a touch later, perhaps one month after the first two.
This will bring Lync to the three key mobile platforms for Microsoft, if it wants one of its products to succeed in that setting: the big players, and its own more modest platform. The iOS app will in fact come in both tablet and smartphone?varieties to better make use of the screen space that Apple?s tablet can provide.
Finally, aside from a data slide of statistics highlighting the progress of Lync, Microsoft announced a new product by the name of?Lync Room System (LRS). LRS-enabled conference rooms will sync with Lync, allowing for easier presentations, and lessened meeting setup times. For the Lync-happy firm, it could be a boon.
Microsoft appears quite content to operate both a consumer, and an enterprise?communications service. Thus the question, for now at least, is settled about the future of Lync; it will remain its own ? now better integrated ? show.

Virtuoso String Quartet On Tuesday, Feb. 19, members of the Virtuoso String Quartet will perform two staples of the French repertoire: the Piano Quartet in C Minor by Gabriel Faur?, and Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Sa?ns.
On the first half of the program, professor John Fisher, piano, will join violinist Steven Li, violist Scott Jessup and cellist Shelley Jessup in a performance of Faur??s dark, poignant chamber piece. Then, after intermission, members of the Virtuoso String Quartet and Wesleyan adjunct and full-time music faculty will present one of the icons of music literature, Saint-Sa?ns' Carnival of the Animals.
Narration will be provided by university president Frederick G. Slabach. The work is scored for two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, glass harmonica, and xylophone. Through use of tone colors, trills, and motifs, the instruments mimic characteristics often associated with animals, such as birds, elephants, and even lions!
Movements from Carnival of the Animals have been featured in pop culture films and shows such as Fantasia 2000 and How I Met Your Mother. The concert will be held in Martin Hall at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? Ethiopian rebels are warning a Canadian oil company against oil exploration in the country's east.
The Ogaden National Liberation Front, or ONLF, said Monday the region is unsafe for the Africa Oil Corporation and said it should halt operations until the rebels make peace with the government.
The ONLF is blamed for the 2007 attack on a Chinese-run oil field in the region in which scores died.
The Ethiopian government spokesman downplayed the statement, saying the region is peaceful and that the rebels don't pose a real threat.
Africa Oil Corp. says it has three projects in the country including in the Ogaden Basin where ONLF has been fighting the government. The rebels want to create an independent state in the Ogaden region, which is inhabited by mostly ethnic Somalis.

Connor O?Leary has been a fan of ?The Amazing Race? since he was little and always wanted to compete in it.
?I thought my dad and I could be so good at this,? said 21-year-old O?Leary, who is a professional cyclist.
They?ve got a shot to find out.
The father-son team from Salt Lake City is one of the 11 teams who will circle the globe in this season of ?The Amazing Race,? which premieres Sunday evening on CBS.
?I?ve loved the places they go,? O?Leary said of the show. ?I love competition. To be kind of racing other people around the world is just pretty neat.?
O?Leary and his father, Dave O?Leary, 58, are both cancer survivors.
Dave O?Leary is a prostate cancer survivor and was diagnosed five-and-a-half years ago.
?A friend of mine prompted me to go in? and be checked, he said. The cancer was removed through surgery. The friend died two summers ago.
Connor was diagnosed with testicular cancer in the summer of 2010.
?He went through not only surgery but chemotherapy,? Dave O?Leary said. And then, there were complications that gave him another near-miss with death.
Both are now free of cancer.
?So far, so good,? the younger O?Leary said.
?You still sweat every blood test,? his father added.
The pair started preparing once they applied to the show, even before they found out if they had had been accepted.
?We took the positive approach,? said Dave O?Leary, who is the Cub scoutmaster in the Holladay 25th Ward, Salt Lake Holladay South Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. ?We really started preparation not knowing we would be on the race. ? It never hurts to be in shape.?
Their planning and preparing took several different forms.
They swam, ran, biked and hiked with backpacks to get ready.
?My dad is super scared of heights,? Connor O?Leary said. They went on the roller coasters at Lagoon to help with that.
They watched every season of the show that includes challenges, puzzles and clues as they try to beat other teams in the race from country to country.
?We did spreadsheets on what the challenges were, which one of us might do it and do best at it and how we were going to decide what we're going to do,? Dave O?Leary said. ?And then, you get in the race and you forget all of that.?
They do have a few things they hope will give them an edge over the other teams.
Connor O?Leary is the youngest of five children and the only boy.
?He and I are best friends,? Dave said. They?ve gone skiing, ice fishing and had other adventures together. David has also gone to several of Connor?s races in various countries, including Italy, Spain, Cayman Islands, Mexico and Canada. Dave brought his bike along, too.
?We?ve done a tremendous amount together and know each other really well. We know each other?s strengths and weaknesses,? Dave said. ?I?ve watched Connor do the hardest things imaginable ? and frankly I know it would be me just trying to keep up.?

The car he drove is a decked-out ricer...heavy tint on the windows, loud blatty muffler, NO2 system, and neon blue wheels. While traveling through VA, he was pulled over by a State Trooper-he was not speeding-and given three tickets. One ticket was for the level of tint-which was illegal in VA, but not Missouri where his roomie is from, one for the muffler-again, illegal in VA but not MO, and having a radar detector-which is illegal in VA. I can understand getting the ticket for the radar detector, but don't see the reason why he got tickets for the windows and muffler. Especially since he was just driving through the state and the car was not his, and that all these things are legal in MO where the car is from. Like I said earlier, he was not speeding, and was not operating the car in any fashion that would be considered reckless. One good thing is that the AH Trooper didn't notice the NO2 buttons, and if he had, he'd have gotten ticketed for that as well...again, that is legal in MO but not in VA. |

In Ma. they usually look the other way on the pipes IF you are not trying to make noise. The tint is pretty strictly enforced. Personally I find it a lot safer at an intersection when I can make eye contact and know the other guy is looking, even if I have the right of way. |

I got myself a lawyer and it was addressed under the interstate commerce act. Needless to say i won. Sure it would have been cheaper to just pay the fines but i am not one to give in if i think i am right regardless of the cost. Edit. Unless it has changed Darkness of tint is measured by Visible Light Transmission percentage (VLT%). In Virginia, this percentage refers to percentage of visible light allowed in through the combination of film and the window.

BRYAN, Texas (AP) ? Two Texas fire lieutenants have died of burns after battling a lodge hall fire, a city official said Saturday.
Gregory Pickard and Eric Wallace, both with the department in the Central Texas city of Bryan, were in a group of firefighters responding to the blaze about midnight Friday at a Knights of Columbus hall, city spokeswoman Mary Lynne Stratta said.
The team entered the burning building but didn't emerge when ordered to evacuate, Stratta said.
Wallace, 36, died at the scene and Pickard, 54, on Saturday at a hospital in Galveston, she said.
"He called for help, said he was low on air," Stratta said of Wallace, a 13-year Bryan Fire Department veteran.
With Wallace still inside, Pickard and two other firefighters ? Ricky Mantey Jr. and Mitchel Moran ? were sent in to rescue him when the roof collapsed in flames, Fire Chief Randy McGregor said.
Rapid response units found the men inside the building. Mantey, 30, and Moran, 21, also were injured. They were taken to the Galveston hospital with burns. On Saturday, Stratta said they were both in serious but stable condition.
The Texas State Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire in Bryan, about 90 miles northwest of Houston. A news release from the city said nothing was being held at the hall at the time.
"These four courageous individuals represent the best of the profession and are true heroes in every sense of the word," McGregor said.
Services for Wallace are scheduled for Thursday in Bryan, while those for Pickard, a 32-year veteran of the department, are pending.

The Shooter describes to the magazine the 15 seconds in which he says he killed Bin Laden in this Abbottabad compound. Photograph: Saeed Shah/MCT via Getty Images
A retired Navy Seal who claims to have killed Osama bin Laden by shooting him three times in the forehead has accused the US military of abandoning him to his fate without any financial support, healthcare or security protection as he makes the hard transition to civilian life.
The former commando was a member of the team of 23 Navy Seals that stormed a house in Abbottabad, Pakistan, on 2 May 2011 and killed the world's most wanted terrorist, according to Esquire. An article in the magazine, written in collaboration with the Center for Investigative Reporting, tells the commando's story as apparently the last person to see Bin Laden alive.
But it is the Navy Seal's caustic comments about his treatment at the hands of the military as he seeks to make the shift back to civilian life that are attracting most attention. The "Shooter", as he is anonymously referred to, tells the magazine that after the Abbottabad raid he felt burned out and decided to take early retirement three years before the official requirement of 20 years' service.
As a result, he said: "my healthcare for me and my family stopped. ? I asked if there was some transition from my Tricare to Blue Cross Blue Shield. They said no. You're out of the service, your coverage is over. Thanks for your sixteen years. Go fuck yourself."
He bitterly remarks that if he had been killed on a special-ops mission, his family would have fared much better than the reality of his retirement. "If I get killed on this next deployment," he told Esquire before he made his final mission to Afghanistan before leaving the navy: "I know my family will be taken care of. College will be paid for, they'll be fine.
"But if I come back alive and retire, I won't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of for the rest of my life. Sad to say, it's better if I get killed."
He was also critical about the lack of security protection he and his family have been provided in the wake of the Bin Laden killing. He told Esquire that the best he was offered was a witness-protection programme similar to that provided for Mafia snitches ? he could be given a new identity driving a beer truck in Milwaukee, he was told.
The Seal told Esquire that he had expected the military at least to enhance security at his home which he shares with his wife and children. "Maybe some courtesy eyes-on checks. Send some Seabees over to put in a heavier, metal-reinforced front door. Install some sensors or something. But there was literally nothing."
The navy, responding to questions from MSNBC, said that it could not corroborate the Shooter's account of events and his post-retirement treatment. "We take seriously the safety and security of our people as well as our responsibility to assist sailors making the transition to civilian life. Without more information about this particular case it would be difficult to determine the degree to which our transition programme succeeded."
The commando's criticisms of his treatment are all the more excoriating because of his status, according to Esquire, as the Navy Seal who took down Bin Laden. He describes to the magazine the 15 seconds in which he apparently made history by shooting the spearhead behind 9/11.
"I shot him, two times in the forehead. Bap! Bap! the second time as he's going down. He crumpled onto the floor in front of his bed and I hit him again, Bap! same place ? He was dead. Not moving. His tongue was out. I watched him take his last breaths, just a reflex breath."
Experts in veteran care said Esquire had gone too far in its summary of the official response to the Seal's 16 years in the navy. The article says that on retirement he received "nothing. No pension, no healthcare, and no protection for himself and his family."
Derek Blumke, who until last month ran the national mental health programme of the US Department of Veteran Affairs, pointed out that as a combat veteran the Seal would be entitled to healthcare for the next five years as well as disability benefits for life relating to any injuries incurred during military service. But Blumke, who worked for six years as an air force electrician and now heads Student Veterans for America, said that the commando's anxieties about the transition to civilian life were representative of the difficulties faced by thousands of retiring service members every year.
"When I left the air force in 2005 it was the scariest time of my life. I was terrified that I wasn't going to be smart enough to succeed," Blumke said.
Zach Iscol, a former marine captain who runs Hire Purpose, a group that matches military veterans with civilian companies, said the department of defense had made strides in recent years in improving its help for veterans. "Historically, the military is so focused on the mission of war that it hasn't done a good job in setting up those leaving the services for success in civilian life, though that's changing."
Iscol predicted that the Shooter's doubts about his ability to find a meaningful role in civvy street would prove to be unfounded. "As an operator in the Navy Seals he has incredibly marketable leadership skills that countless companies would be delighted to benefit from."

Mesothelioma cancer is often caused by exposure to asbestos. People who have received asbestos exposure of as little as one or two months to very low doses are at risk of mesothelioma cancer. A person exposed to asbestos could develop mesothelioma after 50 years of exposure. The 2 common types of mesothelioma are pleural mesothelioma (lung cancer) and peritoneal mesothelioma (abdomen organs).
There are no immediate symptoms of mesothelioma cancer. The symptoms of mesothelioma may appear in 30 ? 50 years after exposure to asbestos.
Symptoms of pleural mesothelioma cancer: shortness of breath and pain in the chest.
Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma cancer: abdominal pain and weight loss, blood clotting abnormalities, anemia and fever.
Please note that these symptoms may be due to other reasons.
Treatment Options for Mesothelioma Cancer
Following are the options for mesothelioma treatment:
Radiation or chemotherapy combined with surgery may increase the survival time by double.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Kerry Washington was a triple threat at the NAACP Image Awards.
The star of ABC's "Scandal" picked up a trio of trophies at the 44th annual ceremony: outstanding actress in a drama series for "Scandal," supporting actress in a motion picture for "Django Unchained" and the President's Award, which is given in recognition of special achievement and exceptional public service.
"This award does not belong to me," said Washington, who plays a slave separated from her husband in "Django Unchained," as she picked up her first trophy of the evening for her role in the film directed by Quentin Tarantino. "It belongs to our ancestors. We shot this film on a slave plantation, and they were with us along every step of the way."
Washington, who plays crisis management consultant Olivia Pope on "Scandal," serves on President Barack Obama's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities.
Don Cheedle was awarded the outstanding actor in a comedy series trophy for his role as a slick management consultant in Showtime's "House of Lies."
"This doesn't belong just to me, but I am taking it home tonight," joked Cheedle.
A few winners weren't present at the Shrine Auditorium to pick up their trophies, including Denzel Washington for outstanding actor in a motion picture for "Flight," Viola Davis for outstanding actress in a motion picture for "Won't Back Down" and Omar Epps for supporting actor in a drama series for Fox's "House."
"Red Tails," the drama about the Tuskegee Airmen, was honored as outstanding motion picture.
"Look! I beat Quentin Tarantino," beamed "Red Tails" executive producer George Lucas as he accepted the award.
LL Cool J, who was honored as outstanding actor in a drama series for CBS' "NCIS: Los Angeles," dedicated his trophy to fellow nominee Michael Clarke Duncan, "The Green Mile" and "The Finder" actor who died last year.
"I wish his family well," said LL. "Let's give it up for him."
Gladys Knight sang during the in memoriam segment, but the beginning of her performance wasn't heard on the live NBC broadcast because of a technical glitch.
Sidney Poitier presented Harry Belafonte with the Spingarn Award, which honors outstanding achievement by an African American. His honor was followed by a serenade from Wyclef Jean and Common.
Other winners at the ceremony hosted by talk show host Steve Harvey included Loretta Devine as supporting actress in a drama series for "Grey's Anatomy," Cassi Davis as outstanding actress in a comedy series and Lance Gross as outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series for TBS' "Tyler Perry's House of Payne."
The Image Awards are presented annually by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, and the group's members select the winners.

Jan. 31, 2013 ? A study led by King's College London has identified a new genetic variant associated with stroke. By exploring the genetic variants linked with blood clotting -- a process that can lead to a stroke -- scientists have discovered a gene which is associated with large vessel and cardioembolic stroke but has no connection to small vessel stroke.
Published in the journal Annals of Neurology, the study provides a potential new target for treatment and highlights genetic differences between different types of stroke, demonstrating the need for tailored treatments.
Approximately 152,000 people in Britain have a stroke each year, costing the UK over ?8.2 billion. While there are thought to be 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK, more than half have been left with disabilities that affect their daily lives.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, often due to a blood clot blocking an artery that carries blood to the brain, which then leads to brain cell damage. Coagulation (blood clotting) abnormalities, particularly easy clotting of the blood, are therefore common contributing factors in the development of stroke.
Dr Frances Williams, Senior Lecturer from the Department of Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology at King's and lead author of the paper, said: 'Previous studies have demonstrated the influence of genetic factors on the components of coagulation. The goal of this study was to extend these observations to determine if they were further associated with different types of stroke.'
The research was carried out in three stages. The first consisted of a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in 2100 healthy volunteers which identified 23 independent genetic variants that were involved in coagulation. The second stage examined the 23 variants in 4200 stroke and non-stroke cases from centres across Europe (Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 2 and MORGAM collections) and found that a particular mutation on the ABO gene was significantly associated with stroke.
Stage three of the study used the MetaStroke cohort, a project of the International Stroke Genetics Consortium which comprises 8900 stroke cases recruited from centres in the Europe, USA and Australia, whose DNA has been collected and undergone GWA scan. It was confirmed that a variant in the ABO blood type gene was associated with stroke, a finding specific to large vessel and cardioembolic stroke.
Dr Williams said: 'The discovery of the association between this genetic variant and stroke identifies a new target for potential treatments, which could help to reduce the risk of stroke in the future. It is also significant that no association was found with small vessel disease, as this suggests that stroke subtypes involve different genetic mechanisms which emphasises the need for individualised treatment.'

You still can't touch an OUYA. Not until March, at the earliest, and that's only if you're a Kickstarter backer. However, one lucky group of folks already has access: game developers. Those among us who shelled out $700 -- as well as the 10 lucky studios who won that contest -- got an early jump on a pre-rooted OUYA dev kit, while those of us who dropped $95 (or more) are left in the lurch. Of course, those early units aren't exactly the couch-friendly consoles we expect to arrive in a few months, but they are representative of the final hardware.
And let's face it -- the OUYA is important. A crowdfunded, extremely inexpensive, open-source game console? That's not exactly the standard (heck, Sony's PlayStation 3 debuted with a $500 baseline). The OUYA is essentially taking the low-cost / high-performance aspect of mobile gaming and moving it into a TV-friendly space, and that concept has even spawned some imitators (the likes of which we'll assuredly see more).
But what do we know about actually using the OUYA? Beyond basic specs and a sporadic showering of images, we've never actually touched the thing. With that in mind, we asked a trio of developers who've spent the last month with their dev kits how they feel about the console thus far, and we've compiled their thoughts below. One month out, how does the OUYA dev kit stack up for developers? Let's find out!

WEBSTER ? When St. Louis Elementary School students graduate they will know a lot about computers if, Gina Keddy has anything to say about it.
And she does.
They?ll know a lot about a great many other things, too.
Mrs. Keddy is the computer technology teacher at St. Louis. All students in the school, from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, spend at least one weekly 45-minute period in the school?s computer classroom throughout the school year.
There are 30 iMac computers in the room, along with an interactive smart-board on which students can move projected images around with a touch of their hands. Smart-boards also are in other classrooms and are especially good for the younger grades.
Buffie Pepka, former technology specialist and now a sixth-grade teacher at St. Louis, wrote the grant applications for the equipment. The computers are state-of-the-art, Mrs. Keddy said.
The students can take what they learn every day in mathematics, English, social studies, science and other classrooms and extend that learning and those skills in the computer room, she said.
The youngsters in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade learn how to use the computer and play games on them. Students in higher classes learn more about computer technology and language. It becomes more technical and comprehensive as they continue through the grades.
For example, when the pupils in kindergarten through first grade play their computer games, they also are learning to read and to do simple mathematics.
?We do lots of math and reading with the younger grades,? Mrs. Keddy said.
Second graders are writing a ?Magic Tree House? story in their classroom which will be produced as a book on the computer, she said.
A fourth-grade class studying astronomy in class can and did come to the computer room to work on programs from the textbook.
A class was asked to write a poem about a historical event. Students used their skills on the computer to pick a type size and style for their poem, came up with a background on which the poem was displayed on the computer screen and printed out the finished product in full color.
But before they got to the type style and size, before they picked out a background, before they did the printout, they had to learn enough about the historical event so that they could write a poem about it. They also had to know how to write a poem.
Mrs. Keddy said time is dedicated to various subjects. There is a math month, a science month, a reading month and a month in which other subjects are highlighted. Many aspects of education can be taught through technology.
The students can get creative with their history studies. For example, eighth-graders put together? their own television news program on the Cuban missile crisis of the 1960s, treating it like breaking news. First, an eighth-grader anchor woman read the news lead-in from what looked? like a TV newsroom. Next came a switch to an authentic-looking White House oval office, in which an eighth-grader acting the part of President John F. Kennedy read a statement.
Then, since no news program is ever so important that TV commercials would be eliminated, two eighth-grade girls came up with an imaginary travel agency. They appeared in appropriate Hawaiian clothing in front of swaying palms, then? bundled up for an arctic trip with a polar bear in the background, and then appeared before the ancient pyramids doing what might (or might not) have been an Egyptian dance. Their tag line, ?You can travel anywhere!? ended the commercial and the program went back to the news.
They were creative, apparently had fun, and more importantly, learned something about the Cuban missile crisis.
Another project for eighth-graders runs all year, Mrs. Keddy said. They have been asked to imagine what life will be like when they are adults and to lay it all out on charts, graphs and spread sheet.
They find a career they think they may want to pursue, find out the average annual salary or wage for that career, then plan a year?s budget for that salary. They figure out expenses such as how much rent or mortgage payments will be, what household expenses might be, how much a car would cost and, if they were to have children, how much it would cost to raise them. At the end of the year the students then write a paper on the project, print everything out and have a book of their work to take with them, she said.
Mrs. Keddy designed the school website and is working on one for St. Louis Parish. One of the services the school website provides is a chance for parents and teachers to communicate. For example, parents or students can go online to get their homework assignments or find out about programs at school.
In addition to the 45 minutes a week of class time in the computer room, students can come in to work on projects when they have time and the room is not occupied. Some come in during recess. Students can get help if they are having trouble with a subject, she said.
Mrs. Keddy, who is in her first year at St. Louis after several years of teaching at Bartlett High School and the Park Avenue School in Webster, said ?the technology here is high quality. I?ve never seen such high quality. The computers are an integral part of the instructional programs at St. Louis.?
