Virtuoso String Quartet On Tuesday, Feb. 19, members of the Virtuoso String Quartet will perform two staples of the French repertoire: the Piano Quartet in C Minor by Gabriel Faur?, and Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Sa?ns.
On the first half of the program, professor John Fisher, piano, will join violinist Steven Li, violist Scott Jessup and cellist Shelley Jessup in a performance of Faur??s dark, poignant chamber piece. Then, after intermission, members of the Virtuoso String Quartet and Wesleyan adjunct and full-time music faculty will present one of the icons of music literature, Saint-Sa?ns' Carnival of the Animals.
Narration will be provided by university president Frederick G. Slabach. The work is scored for two pianos, two violins, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, glass harmonica, and xylophone. Through use of tone colors, trills, and motifs, the instruments mimic characteristics often associated with animals, such as birds, elephants, and even lions!
Movements from Carnival of the Animals have been featured in pop culture films and shows such as Fantasia 2000 and How I Met Your Mother. The concert will be held in Martin Hall at 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
